Things To Consider Before Buying Earphones
1] Frequency Range
As we have studied in our high school Science syllabus that a human ear is capable to hear the frequency from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
So, all the earphones come around with the same range of frequency. In other words, the frequency range determines the base or treble of your earphones.
If we look at the lower frequency range limit then it typically comes from 12-22 Hz.
If we check the higher limit frequency range limit then it comes from 18,000 – 22,000 Hz (18-22 kHz).
For better Base, the lower limit should be minimum [12 Hz will be better than 22 Hz]
For better Treble, the higher limit should be maximum [22 kHz will be better than 18 kHz]
2] Driver Size
Some expensive earphones come with multiple drivers. Since we are talking about the low budget earphones, our earphones will consist of only one driver. Meanwhile, it typically comes with 8-12 mm of diameter.
Drivers are the components in earphones that convert your electrical signal to sound signal. Hence, more air needs to be passed while serving you the sound.
Therefore, larger the driver size, better is the earphone.
3] Frequency Response
Frequency response determines how much of gain you will get at a particular frequency. Also, frequency response is responsible for the variation that you get at different frequencies.
Keeping it simple, if we have a wider frequency response then the earphone will provide us the diverse sound quality.
In short, wider the frequency response, better will be your earphone.
Impedance in earphones means the resistance that current gets while passing through it. We can’t exactly say how it should be.
Lesser impedance produces a hissing sound. On the other hand, higher impedance needs a separate amplifying device. The same device that is used by Radio jockeys and music composers.
Impedance for a normal earphone should be around 28-32 Ω (ohms).
5] Sensitivity and Sound Pressure Level (SPL)
Sensitivity can be termed as efficiency of the earphones. On the other hand, sound pressure level is the term which is used to measure the level of output per milli Volts.
I’ll rather keep this simple here. These terms determine the loudness.
Higher the decibels, louder will be your earphones.
6] Total harmonic distortion
Total harmonic distortion indicates the internal noise that comes due to electronic parts and circuit of the earphones. This distortion can be mostly seen in those cheap Chinese earphones.
I don’t think you might be having any doubt when it comes to distortion.
Normally budget earphones have less than 1% of total harmonic distortion. However, it can be less than 0.5% or 0.1% in some premium and expensive earphones.
Lower the total harmonic distortion, better will be your earphone. It should be less than 1%
7] Noise Cancellation
Noise cancellation is a feature that comes with most of the earphones with a microphone. It cancels all the noise around you.
The noise that is captured by the microphone of an earphone is electronically detected and canceled using the internal circuit.
However, only the low-frequency noise that is constant in nature can be canceled by this technology. For instance, the sound of the ceiling fan or a cooler can be canceled because it is constant and much lower in frequency.
But the high frequency which is random in nature cannot be canceled. For example, if someone nearby talks to you then it cannot be canceled in any way.
Earphones with a microphone generally have the feature of noise cancellation.
